As a historian and fashion designer, I have a great interest in cultural heritage in fashion production. I particularly love traditional materials, craft techniques and clothing concepts.

The Skarabeos design studio is located in the immediate vicinity of the upper Mühlviertel, which was an important center of linen production until the mid-19th century. This gives me access to one of the oldest cultivated plants in the history of textile production and great inspiration for my work. The Skarabeos shirt, for example, is made from a linen/hemp blend that is woven in the Mühlviertler linen weaving mill Vieböck - a company with almost 200 years of tradition.

特に、伝統的な素材、工芸技術、服飾のコンセプトに関心があります。Skarabeosのデザインスタジオは、19世紀半ばまでリネン生産の重要な中心地であったミュールフィアテル地域のすぐ近く。このため、繊維生産の歴史上最も古い栽培植物は身近なもので、その仕事に大きなインスピレーションを与えています。例えば、Skarabeosのシャツは、200年近い伝統を誇るミュールフィアテルのリネン織物工場ヴィーベック（Vieböck）で織られたリネンとヘンプの混紡生地で作られています。

Cultural Heritage

The Vieböck linen weaving mill was founded in 1832 in Helfenberg in the Mühlviertel. At a time when farmers in Upper Austria grew flax and linen weaving was one of the most important crafts. In the heyday of the linen trade - from the end of the 17th century to the middle of the 19th century - linen from Upper Austria had an excellent reputation worldwide. With the electrification of mechanical looms and the import of cotton, the linen market collapsed and many weaving mills had to close. In 1990, textile production was outsourced to low-wage countries, from which only a few Mühlviertel linen weaving mills survived. Since 2003, the Haslach Textile Center has been committed to revitalizing traditional cultural techniques and in 2016 it was included in the UNESCO international register of good practice examples for the preservation of intangible cultural heritage.

Durable and beautiful

Vieböck maintained its position as a family business for six generations. In 1992, the linen weaving mill was taken over by long-time sales manager Johann Kobler and is now run by his son Christoph Kobler. Since then, production has been certified with the two organic quality marks GOTS and IVN BEST to ensure that the entire supply chain meets the highest possible ecological and social standards. The outstanding quality of the fabrics is based on long-staple fibers, which produce a particularly smooth surface when twisted. This makes them extremely robust and retains their beauty for a long time. This is important because clothing is subjected to mechanical stress not only when worn, but also when washed and ironed.

Natural functions

The Skarabeos shirt is woven from a linen/hemp blend. The hemp content makes the fabric even more stable and tear-resistant. What makes these fibers so special is their natural function of breathability - a property that would be attributed to modern fiber technologies. But hemp and linen are among the oldest textile fibers - in the Dzudzuana Cave in Georgia, fibers were recovered from a layer of soil in 2007 that were dated to be 36,000 to 31,000 years old (yr BP ka). Breathable means that the fiber has the ability to absorb moisture from the skin and quickly release it into the environment. This means the fabric is always dry on the skin. Experts speak of 'a gentle embrace'. In high summer temperatures, the linen/hemp blend has a pleasantly cooling effect, but – as a base layer – creates a pleasant body climate all year round.

スカラベオスのシャツはリネンとヘンプの混紡で織られています。ヘンプが含まれていることで、生地はさらに安定し、破れにくくなっています。これらの繊維を特別なものにするのは、素材そのものが持っている通気性。これは現代の繊維テクノロジーにも通ずるものです。しかしヘンプ、リネンは共に世界最古の繊維素材の一つ。グルジアのドゥズィアナ洞窟では、2007年に、土壌層から3万6000～3万1000年前の繊維が発見されています。通気性とは、繊維が皮膚から水分を吸収し、素早く放出する能力を持つことを意味しています。つまり、肌触りは常にドライ。専門家はこれを、「優しい抱擁」であると表現します。気温の高い夏には、リネンとヘンプの混紡素材は心地よい冷却効果を発揮しますが、ベースレイヤーとして、一年中快適な体温を作り出すこともできます。

Asian inspired

The concept of the Skarabeos shirt is inspired by traditional Asian clothing. It is cut loosely and has a T-shape created by the cut sleeves. Functional details include the stand-up collar and the button placket. What is important in terms of wearing comfort is that it is not shaped close to the body, but rather loose and therefore has a sculptural character. At the same time, a layer of air is created between the skin and the fabric, which enables ventilation and supports the natural cooling effect of the fiber.

With its neutral construction, the shirt could be worn by all genders. However, one of the Skarabeos principles is to combine dynamic and functional requirements with the aesthetic appearance of the product. That's why there are two versions: The version for men has a straight shape and a little more room in the shoulders. The version for women is slightly tailored and has bust darts.

Skarabeosのシャツのコンセプトは、アジアの伝統的な衣服にインスパイアされています。ゆったりとカットされた袖はT字型。スタンドカラーとボタンの前立てによる機能的なディテール。着心地という点で重要なのは、身体に密着した形ではなく、むしろルーズであるために、彫刻的な印象を与えることです。同時に、肌と生地の間に空気の層ができるため、通気性が確保され、繊維の自然な冷却効果をサポートします。

そのニュートラルな構造により、このシャツは性別に関係なく着ることができます。しかし、Skarabeosの原則のひとつは、ダイナミックで機能的な要求と、製品の美的外観を両立させること。そのため、2つのバージョンを用意しています。男性用はストレートシェイプで、肩に少しゆとりがあり、女性用はややテーラードで、バストにダーツが入っています。
